At Mapuordit Mercy Beyond Borders works with the principal of the local high school to provide scholarships to all female students.
Eat Greens!
Women in S. Sudan have one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the world. With only minimal access to health care, one out of every six mothers will die giving birth. And, never having had the chance for schooling, most remain unaware of the relation between hygiene and health, the connection between nutrition and health, or the various sources of disease. Mercy Beyond Borders has been conducting Saturday workshops in rural villages to address these health issues. Anna Mijji, a Sudanese woman trained by Sr.Kathleen Connolly, RSM, now leads the workshops. Her messages are simple: Wash your hands. Boil your water. Cover your food. Eat greens. Here she is teaching the local women (who traditionally believe that greens are only for cattle to eat) how to prepare cabbage for their families.
