Little Sisters of St. Therese, HAITI

Student in HaitiThis native Haitian women’s community of nuns lost 5 of its Sisters when the 2010 earthquake crushed its Motherhouse in Port-au-Prince. Still, they continue their work among the displaced. Sister Jacke Louis oversees a network of primary schools in the Gros Morne (big mountain) region, reachable by car about four hours north of the capital. Nearly all schools in Haiti are privately-run; the Catholic-run schools are generally considered to be the best. Sr. Jacke has seen an influx of students since the quake and knows that many others simply do not attend school at all, because their families cannot afford uniforms or tuition. Mercy Beyond Borders partners with her to identify and award scholarships each year to the top girl graduating from each of 16 schools that she oversees.

Mercy Beyond Borders also provide $5,000 in general operating support to their all-girls primary school, St Gabriel’s (500 girls). This is Mercy Beyond Borders’ first partnership in Haiti.
