Marooned
The medical clinic in the remote Kuron Valley treats all manner of ailments—from malaria to cholera, from guinea worm to Hansen’s disease (leprosy), from bullet wounds to crocodile maulings. Lacking a doctor, however, the clinic must send some patients to the hospital in Boma, a day’s journey away over a very rough road. Here the pre-Nursing interns at Kuron carry a man on a stretcher to the bed of a pick-up truck for the journey; the bullet lodged in his pelvis needs surgical attention. Three days later, word reached Kuron that the truck had become mired in mud along the way and had never reached Boma. The patients were marooned by the roadside in a rainstorm for 2 days without food or shelter. Nothing is easy in South Sudan.
