Book clubs in various cities continue to invite Sr Marilyn to discuss her book, This Flowing Toward Me. She will be in San Jose, CA on Sep 1, Folsom, CA on Sep 8, and in Red Bluff, CA on Sep 30.
Art with a Heart
August 20 marks the 2nd annual "Live, Love, Laugh" neighborhood art auction in Kansas City, a benefit for Mercy Beyond Borders. Last year's even raised thousands of dollars for the women and girls of Sudan--a wonderful example of local initiative with global impact. Kudos to JoMarie Guastello and her friends for organizing a 2010 repeat.

Turkish-American Dialogue
On June 19 Sr Marilyn will give a presentation about Mercy Beyond Borders to the Pacifica Institute of Silicon Valley, a Turkish-American group that fosters intercultural dialogue.
JustFaith
Sr Marilyn speaks on June 17 to an ecumenical mix of a dozen church groups in the Bay Area for their graduation from a 9-month course on social justice action grounded in a faith commitment.
Theresa Samuel-Boko Speaks Out
This spring Theresa Samuel-Boko, one of MBB's board members and herself from Sudan, joined Sr. Marilyn on the "speaker circuit" for MBB:
Hunger Summit at Bellarmine High School
On 03/17/2010, Theresa Samuel-Boko who grew up in Sudan and worked in displaced and camps in Africa facilitated a breakout session at Bellarmine’s Justice Summit. Theresa’s presentation titled “Hunger in Africa” stirred the students to recognize the Causes of Hunger in addition to the geographical extent of the hunger epidemic and effect of malnutrition on populations.
Annual Peace Ceremony at Mercy High Burlingame
On 05/19/2010, Theresa Samuel-Boko was invited to to speak at the Annual Peace Ceremony in Mercy High in Burlingame. Ms. Samuel gave the main address on Women, Peace and Justice and eloquently inspiring the students, giving them substantive information about women’s issues around the world and calling for unity in voice and heart.

KC Returning to Sudan
In late June Sr Kathleen Connolly returns to Sudan to monitor the progress of the Women’s Health Project and to hand over the reins to Anna Mijji, the Sudanese woman whom she trained as a health promoter. Anna will continue the weekend workshops in villages for the coming year.

Samuel at MBB Board Meeting
Samuel Garang Akau, a refugee from S. Sudan resettled in 2001 by Catholic Charities of San Jose who subsequently graduated with honors from Stanford University, spoke to the MBB Board meeting on May 8th about the nonprofit he founded: New Scholars, Inc. MBB has been partnering in Africa with New Scholars, providing scholarship funding for its female high school students.

Medical Help for Southern Sudan
MBB Board Member Shirley Tamoria, a practicing medical doctor, recently gathered thousands of dollars’ worth of donated medicines and medical equipment in the San Francisco Bay Area, carefully itemized and packed it all into 3 large duffel bags with the help of students from the University of San Francisco School of Nursing, and carried it to the rural hospital in Mapuordit, S.Sudan. The USF Nursing School also donated nursing procedure checklists, laminated and organized into pocket-size spiral notebooks, along with nursing textbooks in convenient CD format.
Is There a Doctor in the House?
Sister Marilyn, MBB Executive Director, gave the commencement address at College of St Mary in Omaha on May 16. Marilyn received an honorary doctorate in recognition of her life’s work with refugees and displaced persons. She urged the graduates to live passionately, to live gratefully, and always to welcome strangers.
