A Healthier

World Starts With

HER

In South Sudan, healthcare workers are so scarce that families may walk for days to reach care. A girl given the chance to learn can become the nurse her community urgently needs.

The nurse who treats a sick child starts as a girl who needs the chance to learn.

Mercy Beyond Borders helps girls and young women living in extreme poverty get an education and build careers—including in healthcare, where their skills can save lives.

Across South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, and Haiti, we provide scholarships, leadership training, mentoring, and practical support to help girls overcome the barriers that could force them out of school.

From primary school through university and beyond, that support opens doors. Today, our graduates are caring for patients, supporting their families, and leading change in their communities.

Meet Deborah

Deborah was forced into marriage at 16. When she insisted on returning to school, her husband left before their baby was born. She took low-paying work at a health clinic to support herself and her child. After her father died, her younger siblings depended on her, too.

When relatives tried to force her into another marriage, Deborah refused. She wanted to become a nurse.

In 2010, Mercy Beyond Borders provided a nursing scholarship—and support for her family that made it possible for her to study. She graduated in 2013 and went straight to work at her local hospital.

Today, Deborah leads a hospital ward in South Sudan. For 13 years, she has treated sick children, delivered babies, and cared for thousands of people. Her earnings have helped educate her children and siblings, and she now advocates against the forced marriage that interrupted her own education.

Deborah is one of 135 MBB university graduates working in healthcare, bringing knowledge and compassionate care to communities where both are urgently needed. Hundreds more are following in her footsteps.

Once denied the chance to finish school, she is now someone families turn to when a life is at risk.
