High School

Mercy Beyond Borders awards high school scholarships to girls finishing elementary schools with high academic marks. As Mercy Beyond Borders Scholars, they become part of the movement to develop young women leaders who exemplify the values of personal integrity, academic excellence, and compassionate action.

Mercy Beyond Borders believes in fostering personal relationships with each high school Scholar. Using a case management approach, our staff visit their family homes. We provide ongoing emotional support, counseling, academic tutoring, computer classes, and monthly leadership workshops for skills development (and fun!).

Besides the obvious educational and career benefits accruing to the Scholars by continuing in school, these scholarships deter early marriage. When minors stave off pregnancies and marriages, everyone wins. It’s critical for chipping away at generational cycles of poverty.

Meet Kedeline

Kedeline

Mercy Beyond Borders high school Scholar, Kedeline, outside her home in Wo Siten, Haiti

Meet Kedeline, a tenacious young woman from the mountain neighborhood of Wo Siten in rural northern Haiti. Her drive to make a difference is fueled by her passion for psychology, a response to the urgent need for mental health support in her country, especially for the vulnerable youth grappling with insecurity.

With her sights set on becoming a psychologist, already, she's translating her ambitions into action by volunteering at a local primary school. Through this, she's become a steady beacon of hope, providing invaluable mentorship to younger students.

However, Kedeline's ambitions don't stop at academics. Her entrepreneurial spirit shines brightly as she aims to contribute to her family's business—an indispensable lifeline for her neighborhood. Operating from their courtyard, Kedeline’s parents sell crucial provisions. Her father transports these supplies uphill, either by wheelbarrow or donkey, ensuring that the community's essentials are accessible.

Kedeline is determined to organize a community project to grade the steep mountain road, currently only passable by foot. Her vision is to make it easily traversable, enabling motorcycle taxis to reach the top, revolutionizing transportation for the neighborhood.

Thanks to the high school scholarship from Mercy Beyond Borders, Kedeline's dreams have found wings. She’s one step closer to becoming a psychologist. Education has been a transformative force in her life, unlocking a world of opportunities and empowering her to make her mark. As she excels in her studies and uplifts her community, Kedeline is living proof that with the right opportunities, young minds can create extraordinary impacts.

We are so pleased with this program. Kedeline is excelling in school. We feel as if Mercy Beyond Borders is an extension of our family,” Antony, Kedeline’s dad.

Kedeline is just one of 282 bright young women across Haiti, South Sudan, Uganda & Kenya who are currently pursuing their high school education through scholarships awarded by Mercy Beyond Borders.
