Reginah, South Sudan, enrolled in 2015

Growing up in a home no sturdier than a tent and as the youngest of six, Reginah knew scarcity not as a fear, but as a daily reality. From an early age, she recognized that education would be her way forward. In 2015, she became a Mercy Beyond Borders (MBB) Scholar—changing the course of her life.

Reginah’s educational journey began at St. Bakhita Girls Primary School, where Head Teacher Sister Edvine often reminded students, “Education is the key to success.” That message took root deeply, shaping Reginah’s mindset and goals. She completed high school in 2018, and, with MBB’s support, went on to pursue a degree in Commerce at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in Kenya.

The path wasn’t without obstacles. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020 and schools shut down, Reginah returned to South Sudan to support her family. With no clear timeline for reopening, all she could do was wait—and hope. Thankfully, she resumed her studies in 2021 with renewed focus and determination.

Driven by a strong sense of responsibility to herself, her family, and her community, Reginah actively sought out opportunities to give back. While at university, she joined fellow Scholars in a visit to Ushindi Children’s Home in 2023, where they taught children how to care for the environment and create low-cost, eco-friendly cleaning products.

Reginah’s giving nature and emotional intelligence led her to quietly mentor a peer who had missed the start of their internship. She took it upon herself to help him catch up and feel included. These quiet acts of leadership reflect her deep belief in lifting others as she climbs.

MBB Scholarships Coordinator, Judith, visits with Reginah and her peers at their school campus.

In 2024, Reginah graduated with a degree in Commerce—a milestone that marked a turning point in her life. Reflecting on the journey, she shares this message with MBB and our supporters:

“I am filled with immense gratitude and a sense of accomplishment. I owe a significant part of my achievements to your unwavering support and belief in my potential. I am determined to make the most of this incredible opportunity. Your generosity has been a driving force, and your commitment to my education has been a constant source of motivation and inspiration.”

Graduation day—a moment Reginah never thought could be possible.

Reginah credits MBB’s guidance and support not only with expanding her knowledge, but also with instilling the confidence and sense of purpose that now shape her approach to life.

At 27, she works as a Community Mobilizer with the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan, focusing on social work and development. She leads workshops on financial literacy, conflict resolution, and stress management—skills she first developed through MBB.

Her journey is a powerful testament to how education can transform a life—and, in turn, a community.
