Moriku lost both parents when she was young and was sent to live with relatives who kept her out of school. At 10, she was sexually assaulted by her sister’s husband. Later, an uncle offered to pay her school fees but also abused and threatened her. Determined to continue her education, Moriku brewed alcohol and farmed to earn money for school.

An MBB scholarship finally gave Moriku a safe and reliable way to continue. She attended nursing school and became the first woman in her family to receive a formal education.

Today, Moriku is a nurse at St. Bakhita Girls’ Primary School, MBB’s flagship project and South Sudan’s only all-girls primary school. She provides healthcare to more than 1,000 students, including girls who have survived forced marriage and other forms of violence.
